What is a veneer?
A Veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth, like a false fingernail fits over a nail. They are made specially to fit your teeth.
Why would I need a veneer?
Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. You may wish to cover up a single discoloured or stained tooth or to lighten front teeth. If your teeth are chipped, then a veneer can be used to cover the whole front of the tooth with a thicker section to replace the broken part. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps.
How are teeth prepared for a veneer?
Some of the shiny outer enamel surface of the tooth may be removed to make sure that the veneer can be bonded permanently in place later. Once the tooth has been prepared, the dentist will take an ‘impression’ of your teeth, which will be sent away to technicians, who will make your veneer.
Do veneers take long to fit?
Having veneers fitted will take at least two visits: the first to prepare the tooth, take an impression and to match the shade, and the second to fit the veneer in place, your dentist will show you the veneer on your tooth to make sure you are happy with it.
How long will a veneer last?
Veneers should last for many years-but they can chip or break, just as your own teeth can. Small chips can be repaired, or a new veneer fitted if necessary.
You can take your smile from faded to fantastic with bright, natural-looking veneers. The aging process, combined with what we eat, drink and smoke, can really take its toll on your teeth, making the enamel look thin, worn or discoloured. Wear and tear to your dentition can age your entire face, but with veneers, you can have the straight, white smile you have always dreamed of.
Veneers are thin slivers of porcelain, which are permanently bonded to the front surface of the teeth. Veneers can be used to change the shape, size and colour of the teeth with little or no need for tooth filing involved. Veneers look beautiful and natural and can last for 10-15 years.
Veneers are bonded to your teeth so that the fit, shape and colour look totally natural, and lets you smile with confidence.
We can also make veneers and laminates in composite resin, a process which is known as composite bonding. This is usually completed in one visit and will transform your smile instantly. This material doesn’t last as long as porcelain but will look good for 6-8 years.
A badly broken or heavily filled tooth can become weak and can ruin the appearance of your smile. A simple crown will work wonders for both the strength and appearance of your teeth.
A crown is like a crash helmet for your tooth, making it stronger in the long term as well as smoothing out the way it looks. Having a crown fitted involves your dentist taking an impression of your existing tooth so that the shape can be perfectly matched to your new crown for a comfortable, secure and natural looking fit. Crowns can be made from a variety of different materials, such as porcelain or porcelain bonded to gold, but Smiles Dental dentists recommend porcelain crowns because they are the most natural looking and can be made completely indistinguishable from natural teeth giving you a fantastic smile.
New crown materials include Procera, which is a modern crown made of all porcelain, produced using cutting edge cad-cam technology to produce a crown that is extremely strong and looks great.
Whatever your choice of material, your Smiles Dental dentist will explain the process to you in full and help you to get the best crown.
