Mike, originally from Penygroes, near Caernarfon, graduated with merit from Anglesey Dental School in the summer of 2004. In August of that year, he moved back up to North Wales to undertake vocational training (an apprenticeship scheme) in Penrhyndeudreth, near Porthmadog. He worked there for two years, initially as an NHS Dentist, before becoming responsible for the care of 700 adult Denplan patients who had transferred from a nearby practice which was closing down.
In the summer of 2006, he left Penrhyndeudraeth to work in a hospital setting, in the oral/maxillofacial surgery departments at Ysbyty Gwynedd (Bangor), Glan Clwyd, Llandudno & Wrexham. During this time, he passed his examination to gain membership of the prestigious dental faculty at the Royal College of Surgeons in London. In his hospital job he gained valuable experience in dealing with facial trauma, skin cancers, difficult extractions, & assisting with the surgical & medical management of patients who had head & neck cancers, under the direct supervision of the Consultants.
In the summer of 2007, he returned to dental practice & worked part time with Dr Graham Roy in Menai Bridge. At the beginning Mike devoted one day a week with Dr Roy as his Implant Assistant, where he saw many intricate surgical procedures. He is a member of the ITI (International Team for Implantology), a worldwide prestigious organisation, & he is mentored in-house by Dr Roy in the field of implantology. He assists Dr Roy with his post graduate dental study group for local Dentists, & he has also presented lectures on a few occasions at the Welsh Dental Society annual conferences. Mike also has a keen interest in the field of endodontics, & has a Certificate in Endodontics from the University of Chester in 2008. Between 2008 & 2010, Mike studied part time for his Diploma in Restorative Dentistry with the Royal College of Surgeons, & passed in January 2010. He is also an approved Invisalign provider since 2009 using clear, almost invisible braces to move teeth. He is currently pursuing his studies in restorative dentistry at the University of Leeds, where he will hopefully finish his MSc course in the autumn of 2011. Mike is also keen to take the Diploma exam in implant dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, & is currently studying & collecting relevant cases to sit this exam in the near future. His main interests in dentistry are periodontics (treatment of gums), endodontics (root canal treatment), implantology (replacing teeth), & treatment of tooth wear, especially erosion involving dietary acids. He published a paper in Dental Update in 2008 on ‘Alcopop induced dental erosion: Management in General Dental Practice’. His current MSc research is also in the field of erosion.
Mike was also winner of both the “Best Young Dentist” South West & Wales 2010 at the Dentistry Awards 2010 & one of only nine finalists in the “Dentist of the Year” category at the Dental Awards 2011. He was also short listed in March for the “Smile Awards 2011″, under the category of “Conservative Composite Smile”
